The Book Review of The Infernal Devices by Philip Reeve

The Infernal Devices is a series of young adult novels by Philip Reeve that’s set in the same world as his Mortal Engines Quartet. The main characters from this quartet play minor roles in the series, and vice versa. The plot is fairly complex, so I’m going to introduce you to the premise first before breaking down the summary:

The books are about two teenagers, Amy and Kady, who travel to another dimension known as “the Other Place.” They meet a boy named Will and his sister, Nell. Together they work to save their new home from falling into an evil trap called “the Cage.”

In The Infernal Devices, Eliot and Tessa are cousins; they don’t meet until Book 6 when they’re both at St. Scholastica’s (the school where Tessa studied). They have a distant relationship at first—Eliot is protective of Tessa because she’s his cousin and doesn’t like him asking questions about her past—but eventually become close friends. In fact, it was their friendship that helped them discover who was responsible for killing the other students during an attack by demons (Book 3) .

In City of Ember , another Philip Reeve book about subterranean cities being built below London through tunnels dug by humans over centuries, there are two main characters who are also related: Doon Harrow & Jeb Harrow-Harrows

The plot is fairly complex, so I’m going to introduce you to the premise first before breaking down the summary.

The premise of this series is that there are four books, each focusing on a different character and their experiences. There’s The Mortal Instruments, which deals with Clary Fray and her adventures in New York City; then comes City of Bones, which follows Jace Wayland as he navigates his new home at Shadowhunter Academy while fighting demons; after that comes City of Fallen Angels (the first book), which follows Valentine Morgenstern from his time as an angel and back through history before coming to London where he will face off against Magnus Bane once again!

The summary for each book is below:

  • The Mortal Instruments: This one focuses on Clary Fray who lives her life in New York City but soon discovers that she has special powers when she finds out about vampires attacking people close to her friend Izzy who was kidnapped by them earlier during a party at someones house where they live together now too because whatever happened didn’t go well enough when someone tried stealing something valuable off him earlier so now everything seems fine between them but then again maybe not because nothing ever really stays easy forever anyway right? As if things weren’t complicated enough already though…

In Mortal Engines, we learn that a cataclysmic war called the Sixty Minute War occurred thousands of years ago.

In Mortal Engines, we learn that a cataclysmic war called the Sixty Minute War occurred thousands of years ago. The war was caused by the invention of the sky-sail, which allowed people to travel around on their own ships and build cities in isolated locations. The war lasted 60 minutes and destroyed most of Earth’s population—except for London and New York City (which were built by survivors).

The book also contains many references to other books or movies: Thomas Edison had invented light bulbs many decades before any other country; H.G Wells wrote about time travelers traveling through space; Jules Verne wrote about underwater kingdoms; George Orwell wrote 1984 while living under constant surveillance by government agents who monitored what he read online or wrote down on paper instead of sending it directly into cyberspace where it could be accessed at any moment by anyone else with access to computers everywhere at once!

In this post-apocalyptic world, giant cities are mounted on giant wheels, allowing them to move around freely and capture smaller towns and cities for their resources.

The cities are powered by a fossil fuel called “stoker,” which is obtained from the stalks that grow on the backs of elephants in Africa. The people who live in these huge structures are also used as slaves—they have no choice but to obey their rulers or die.

They can move at up to 300 miles per hour (186 kilometers) across land or water; however, they cannot jump over large bodies of water because there aren’t enough wheels available to make these jumps possible. Their movement is controlled by computers called “The Stalker” which run along each part of the city’s outer shell—these computers communicate with each other via radio signals so that everyone knows where everyone else is located at any given time!

But these cities can be attacked as well, hence all the weapons and defense mechanisms they possess.

But these cities can be attacked as well, hence all the weapons and defense mechanisms they possess. In addition to their walls, each city is protected by a force field that blocks incoming attacks from any direction but the one from which it came. The cities are also armed with weapons that can be used against attackers; for example, if an attacker manages to get through the outer wall of a city, then he must contend with its defenders who will shoot arrows at him until he dies or runs away (and hopefully does not get killed). If an attacker manages to break into a city using bombs or other explosives, then there will be people inside who will fight back with swords and spears until either everyone has been killed or enough time has passed so that reinforcements arrive in time stop their foes’ advance before they break through into town proper…

Mortal Engines takes place in this world thousands of years later; it focuses on a city called London that’s trying to gain more resources by attacking smaller cities.

The setting is post-apocalyptic and the cities are mounted on giant wheels and move around freely. The engines powering them run on heat so they need to find more fuel, which is why you see lots of characters using fire as weapons in their fight against the larger city.

The main characters are Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw; they live in different classes of society.

The main characters are Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw; they live in different classes of society. Tom is a lower class citizen who works in the sewers and moves between jobs, while Hester is a member of the upper class who lives on the outskirts of London in a cottage with her mother. When they both become involved with Valentine’s plans to overthrow Queen Victoria’s rule over England, they must band together if they want to try and stop him from succeeding.

Hester lives in poverty with her mother until she suddenly disappears when Hester is 12 years old.

Hester lives in poverty with her mother until she suddenly disappears when Hester is 12 years old. She was last seen running from Thaddeus Valentine, a handsome man who promises to make Hester his wife if she helps him find out who killed his wife.

The book begins with the story of how an orphan named Hester Catherick became a prisoner and partner to her uncle, Jonathan Small. This begins the journey that will change their lives forever as they are forced into secret world where witches exist, vampires walk the streets looking for prey and those who are different must hide away from society’s eyes lest they too be hunted down by those who fear them!

It’s not until much later that Hester finds out her mother has been murdered by Thaddeus Valentine, one of London’s leaders and a scientist.

It’s not until much later that Hester finds out her mother has been murdered by Thaddeus Valentine, one of London’s leaders and a scientist. He is attempting to find a way to bring back the dead using any means necessary. He also wants to defeat London City, which was built as a defense against him and other scientists who want to destroy them all.

Thaddeus is as powerful as he wants to be and can do whatever he wants because of it; however, Hester doesn’t let this get too far in her head before she realizes how important it is for her family (and others) not only survive but thrive in this world where power corrupts absolutely!

Conclusion

So, that’s the premise of The Infernal Devices. I hope you had fun reading it and enjoyed getting to know these characters more than a little bit. If you want to read more books like this one, check out my other reviews!
