The Dog Stars is a novel by Peter Heller, published in 2011. This book follows the story of Hig, a pilot who lives at an airport with his dog Jasper and friend Bangley who is a bit of a survivalist. Hig flies his plane over the empty landscape hoping to find other people or their camps so that he can kill them depending on whether or not he knows them.

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller is the story of a world destroyed by a flu pandemic. The book is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where most of humanity has been wiped out and only two people remain: a pilot who lives at an airport with his dog and friend, and his wife who survived by hiding in her basement. In this novel you follow Tom Canty through his journey as he tries to find his wife after she’s gone missing without any sign of life anywhere in sight. As he travels through this bleak landscape trying to survive on his own, Tom meets others along the way who have their own stories to tell about what happened during this worldwide catastrophe—and how they’re trying to live their lives under these terrible circumstances.

The remaining humans have scattered and live in small groups, mostly in an attempt to stay far away from one another.

People who have survived tend to be fairly tough characters, as they’ve had to kill others to survive.

If you enjoy apocalyptic fiction and are looking for something new to read, I would recommend this one.

The Dog Stars is set during a future that has been ravaged by disease, famine and war. The main character is Dean Koontz’s son Owen who was born on the last day of the twentieth century (or so he believes). After his father dies, Owen becomes an astronaut but finds himself unable to leave earth due to its current state (i.e., The Great Plague). Instead he spends most of his days writing letters back home while waiting for his mother Helen (who died years ago) or someone else who might come along shortly after she does not return from work one night leaving him alone again…

In summary, The Dog Stars is a great book that I would recommend to anyone looking for something new to read. It’s not a typical apocalypse story, but it does have some elements of one and it’s set in an interesting world with great characters. If you enjoyed other apocalyptic fiction like Cormac McCarthy’s The Road or movies like Mad Max: Fury Road then this might be right up your alley too!
