David Drake is one of my favorite authors, so it’s no surprise that I’ve read every single one of his books. The Sea Without a Shore is the 12th volume in Drake’s long running (and amazingly good) Hammerverse series and it follows Captain Daniel Leary and his friend, intelligence agent Adele Mundy as they rescue the Empress of Cinnabar from a planet she was shipwrecked on. This book is excellent and only slightly hampered by some poor editing work that causes some sentences to make no sense at all. The book is full of action, adventure, and fun—making this a great entry into the series for new readers who want an introduction to what makes Drake’s writing so amazing

This book is the 12th volume in Drake’s long running (and amazingly good) Hammerverse series. If you haven’t read any of the books, they’re all set in a universe where a group of people—the Hammerites—are attempting to create their own colony on Mars after Earth was destroyed by an alien race known as The Drakes.
In this installment, we meet one of their leaders: Captain Jack Quinton (also known as Jack Q). He has been promoted from captain to admiral and now controls his own fleet of ships that travel between Earth, Mars and Jupiter (which orbits our star). As such, he has become extremely wealthy over time but also feels like he hasn’t accomplished anything significant yet because there is still so much left undone after generations spent building up everything from scratch!
In this book, Captain Daniel Leary and his friend, intelligence agent Adele Mundy have to rescue the Empress of Cinnabar from a planet she was shipwrecked on.
In this book, Captain Daniel Leary and his friend, intelligence agent Adele Mundy have to rescue the Empress of Cinnabar from a planet she was shipwrecked on. The story takes place in Drake’s home universe that includes many different planets. The characters are all from different cultures and backgrounds but they share one thing in common: they’re all trying to survive in a world that has been overrun by aliens who want to take over Earth!
The main character for this story is Princess Jasmine Al-Saud (Jasmine for short). She has lived on her own planet since birth; however she wants something more out of life than just being queen of her own country—she wants adventure! So when her father dies suddenly after making plans with other countries’ leaders about how they can unite together against an alien invasion force coming towards them through space travel technology developed centuries ago by Professor Philip Hammonds (Hammonds), he leaves behind some very important documents that tell Jasmines how important it is for her family member(s) act quickly before anything bad happens because things could get worse…
The book is excellent and only slightly hampered by some poor editing work that causes some sentences to make no sense at all.
The book is excellent, but it’s also somewhat hampered by some poor editing work that causes sentences to make no sense at all. For example, in one passage Drake writes: “Despite its size and relative isolation, the island had not been conquered by any of European powers until 1513 when Spain under Charles V sent a fleet there with men from his newly formed Spanish Armada.”
The sentence makes no sense because it doesn’t make clear which country took over what part of what island for how long. It could be Spain or England or both! So if you’re reading this book and some sentence like that comes up—don’t worry about it; just skip ahead and see what happens next in your story!
The book is full of action, adventure, and fun.
The book is full of action, adventure, and fun. It’s a great read that will keep your attention from page one to the last page. I would recommend it to anyone who likes stories about pirates and sea battles.
The Sea Without a Shore: A Novel of Adventure on Land and at Sea in the Golden Age (The Adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow) by David Drake
This series has been around for years now, so if you haven’t read any other books by this author then this might be an opportunity for you!
This is a great entry into the series
This is a great entry into the series. The Sea Without a Shore is the 12th volume in David Drake’s long running (and amazingly good) Hammerverse series, and it’s set in the same universe as previous books in the series. If you haven’t read any of his other works, this book will be an excellent jumping off point because it’s self-contained and can be read on its own—but if you’ve been following along with Drake’s adventures since day one, then this is definitely worth checking out!
Conclusion
I definitely recommend this book. It’s a great entry into the series and only slightly hampered by some poor editing work that causes some sentences to make no sense at all. I give it five out of five stars!
